Exploring stories of light amidst darkness, trailblazing women who changed history, and the new wave of “soft living” redefining success for women everywhere.
If you’ve grown tired of the relentless negativity dominating the headlines, you’re not alone. With my years in journalism, I noticed a tension between reporting hard-hitting, often grim news, and the craving for stories that spark hope. My commitment became to shine a light on the good that’s happening all around us, often overshadowed by louder, darker narratives.
Even early on, I was drawn to positive, people-focused stories, highlighting non-profits, community changemakers, and those small but powerful acts of kindness. This passion led to a new series of the MPTR podcast dedicated to uplifting news and the women behind them, offering listeners a much-needed reprieve from rage-bait and clickbait.
WHAT'S GOOD?
1. Texas Tweens Choosing Service Over Screens
In this episode, I share the heartwarming story of 12-year-old Sebastian Beale and his friends in Abilene, Texas. Instead of spending hours gaming, they’re stocking a community pantry with their moms at Aldersgate Methodist Church. Their small acts of service are nourishing neighbors in need and inspiring their peers to do the same. As Sebastian’s mom wisely said, “No matter who you are or what you’ve been through, love and compassion is what makes the world go round.”
2. Unveiling the Universe: The First Image of the Cosmic Web
Astronomers captured a direct image of the “cosmic web”—the vast filaments of gas connecting galaxies. While the science may be daunting, the awe is universal. I reflect on how these stunning images invite us all, regardless of expertise, to marvel at the intricacies of our universe and the brilliance of human discovery.
3. A Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Treatment
The third story is a beacon of hope for countless families: a light-activated salt treatment that targets aggressive breast cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. Developed by researchers at Michigan State University and UC Riverside, this next-step in cancer therapy could lead to safer and more precise options for patients, highlighting the ongoing importance of scientific innovation.
WHAT'S HER STORY?
March is Women’s History Month, and I take this opportunity to celebrate three women whose courage and vision redefined their fields:
Patsy Mink: The first woman of color in Congress and the first Asian American woman to run for President, co-authoring Title IX, which ensures gender equality in education.
Wangari Maathai: The Kenyan Nobel laureate and founder of the Greenbelt Movement, which has planted over 51 million trees and empowered women throughout Africa.
Dolores Huerta: Legendary labor leader and civil rights activist, who co-founded the United Farm Workers and continues to champion the rights of immigrants, Latinos, and women well into her 90s.
Their stories remind us: resilience, advocacy, and faith can change the world.
WHAT'S GOING ON?
In the trending segment, I tackle “soft living,” a social media-driven movement where women are prioritizing peace, balance, and boundaries over relentless hustle. Born out of burnout and disillusionment with the “boss babe” grind, soft living is about slowing down, protecting mental well-being, and honoring your limits.
I often struggle to relax, shaped by a childhood filled with activities and a career that values productivity. Yet I recognize that soft living is essential: rest can be just as productive as hustle. As we redefine success, maybe it’s time we all learned to embrace a bit of softness and grace.
The episode closes with a powerful reminder: every woman’s story is valuable. Whether you’re striving, overcoming, or praying for breakthrough, you’re not alone. Soft living doesn’t mean giving up ambition; it means nurturing yourself so you can thrive, inspire, and serve out of abundance.
If you’re ready to lean into hope, honor women who paved the way, and redefine what success means for you, More Precious Than Rubies is your place to start.
